Kind of a melancholy morning. I missed my flight to Houston. Actually, I didn't miss it, I was just prevented from getting on the plane....
I got to the ticket counter at 7:30. At 7:37, I had my receipts for my ticket and was ready to check my bag. The ticket counter lady said, "you're too late". What? "You have to check-in 30 minutes before departure". It was 30 minutes prior to departure when I got checked-in, but she didn't get to me until 7 minutes later. Even while I was talking to her and trying to get her to check my bag, I heard my name over the PA system for final boarding call. I asked her, "can you please let them know I'm on my way". She went over to the phone and talked to them. Then started typed on her keyboard furiously. I thought, "great, she's working with me." She came over with a printed ticket and set, "This is your standby ticket for the next flight to Houston." Whatever, Continental Airlines. I'm sitting in OKC on standby hoping to make the next flight.
I haven't been home since Friday the 12th. I had to flee from Houston. I miss being home.
I haven't seen my family since Monday morning.
I have to fly to Houston to connect on a flight to Midland.
I have to drive 550 miles from Midland to Houston...today.
Did I say I miss my family? So much. If I were with them, all of this other stuff would be so minor.
My work/home balance has been off-kilter for the past several months. Things are slower, so now I can start to find a balance.
I really want to see this live. I'm sure it's amazing...and why is it that the guy is not singing. He doesn't even have a microphone. Is it because it's hard to pop and lock with a mic in your hands? Or is it that he is part of the entourage and is up there for eye candy?
Her topic was on church burnout...I totally identified with it. I'm not burned out currently, but I have been a couple of times in the past.
A couple of things that I identified with:
So much more to share, but you'll have to wait. Her book can be preordered here.
- Job was not to set the vision, job was to clarify and translate the vision.
- If people don’t get it, then vision really doesn’t matter.
- Most pastors need someone like you to communicate the vision effectively.
- One of the greatest opportunities the communications director has is to create alignment
3 questions you have to have the answer to.
- Who is God calling us to reach? Lame answer = everyone
- What is it going to take to reach them? What is it that we need to stop doing in order to effectively reach who God’s calling us to reach. No unchurched person has ever walked in and asked “Hey do you have AWANAS”.
- Are we willing to pay the price?
First day of conference was yesterday. Here's a couple of notes I took .
be out there. get out of the tank. leave the office. take vacations.
throw out the religious rule book (not the Bible).
XXXChurch.com: religious rulebook says don’t go there. Don’t do it. it’s not where you’re supposed to be.
We need to overcome our fears - we need to grow a pair
Action is not only rewarded, it is demanded.
Shamu has an easy life. A Killer whale feels pain.
There will be a lot of pain
This song might be the perfect Christian song. It has praise, rock and roll, and God zapping people.
